On Friday, the BJP found itself in hot water after three of its Lok Sabha MPs visited the home of Sajjan Kumar, the convicted anti-Sikh riots figure, to offer condolences after his death.
Ramvir Bidhuri, Yogender Chandolia, and Kamaljeet Sehrawat recently went to Sajjan Kumar’s house to pay their respects to his family.
Kumar, who died on August 20, was serving two life sentences for murdering Sikhs during the 1984 riots that broke out after Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated.
His prayer meeting is set for Saturday in New Delhi.
HS Phoolka, who joined the BJP back in April, slammed the visit. “I strongly condemn the visit of these three MPs to the residence of mass murderer Sajjan Kumar to offer condolences on his death,” he said.
Phoolka said the gesture felt especially offensive, given the BJP’s record of standing with the riot survivors and helping ensure Sajjan Kumar stayed behind bars.
“Sympathy should go to victims and their families, many of whom still live with the trauma. I call for a boycott of these three MPs,” Phoolka added. He’s spent years working to support riot survivors and push for justice.
When asked for the party’s view, the BJP tried to distance itself. “The three MPs went to Sajjan Kumar’s house in their personal capacity, not as party representatives,” said party spokesperson RP Singh.
Bidhuri (South Delhi), Sehrawat (West Delhi), and Chandolia (North West Delhi) all represent constituencies carved out from the old Outer Delhi seat, which Sajjan Kumar once represented for the Congress in the Lok Sabha.
