Ebola outbreak in DR Congo surpasses 5,000 cases, report says

Date:

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is facing its 17th and deadliest Ebola outbreak on record, surpassing 5,021 cases and 2,378 deaths. Declared in May 2026, this fast-moving epidemic is driven by the rare Bundibugyo ebolavirus strain, which currently lacks specific approved vaccines or licensed treatments.
Current Outbreak Status
  • Total Scale: Over 5,021 reported cases and 2,378 deaths, making it the second-largest Ebola epidemic in global history behind the 2014–2016 West Africa outbreak.
  • Affected Provinces: Spreading across Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, and Tshopo, with Ituri remaining the hardest-hit region. [1,
  • Global Impact: A small number of travel-related or imported cases have been tied to international transit, though local transmission remains centered in the DRC.
Key Challenges
  • Strain Complications: Caused by the Bundibugyo virus species, rendering standard Zaire-strain countermeasures like Ervebo unapproved for this context by the World Health Organization.
  • Community Resistance: Misinformation and traditional burial practices continue to complicate clinical intervention and safe burial deployments
